Since the beginning of December, I’d been working on increasing my productivity rate. I had a plan and promised to reveal it in by the end of January if it worked. Well, it’s April and I’m glad to report that my PR went from 5% to 25%. And I’m doing it by using a tool I talked about in a previous post… but using it my way.
In a post I did last October called "I Do Something", I talked about the app Todoist. I used it for a short while and then forgot about it. So when I started looking for ways to increase my PR in December, I seriously wasn’t thinking about anything that I’ve tried and failed with. But then I had a thought. What if… what if I had the right tool but used it the wrong way?
Everybody has a system, a way to get things done that works for them. So it makes sense that when a person tries a system created by another, it might not work unless they make that system theirs. Ugh, that looked confusing so I’ll give an example. P90X is a workout system where they tell you what to eat and when to workout. At first I sucked at it, until I began making P90X fit my schedule. If I couldn’t eat the food, I found its nutritional equivalent. If it instructed me to workout on a day that I couldn’t, I found a day that worked better for me and made it happen. That customization made it much easier to complete the program. Got it?
So I took a second look at Todoist to figure out how I could make it fit my mindset. Since Todoist is an app on the phone, I decided to put it along with my most used apps:
I started off with simple tasks, like making food once a week or brushing my teeth daily (being around all these dirty ass people and living in a cave takes its toll on my desire for hygienic upkeep). I noticed that one of my big problems last time was that I couldn’t stay motivated enough to write down my to do list every single day. I solved this by creating a broad weekly schedule for what I wanted to do during my weekends at the bank job. As the picture above shows, there’s no set date to complete these tasks. I simply write down what I want to do, and it eventually gets done during the week.
Being at 25% PR has been great. Clean teeth, a regular workout schedule, and a list that gives me something to do every day. And going through the purchase process of Property 5 has been so much easier thanks to my new ability to get things done quicker than before. I haven’t been this productive since the 5th grade, when I still had both parents keeping me in line. Now that 25% is becoming my norm, I’d like to increase it to at least 30% by the end of June. By the end of the year, I'll be retired from paycheck work. Which means that I'll be the only person to blame if shit goes bad. But with an improved production rate, a free schedule, five properies, and my constant fear of being broke... I should be just fine.
