Tee hee hee.
At the beginning of this year I decided to get rid of tax guy Ross as my accountant. I felt that he wasn’t doing enough to help me, and was further angered when he never replied to important question I had about my financial future. So I called around and decided to get a new accountant, tax guy Matt. He works at a financial firm, and many of his clients are landlords. So I gave him my taxes to do and he did them. The result?
Tee hee hee.
I am getting a refund! Yes! A refund!!! I never thought I would write those words! I’m getting almost $1200 back but, to be honest, I’d be happy if it was $12. I was getting sick and tired of having to add more debt every year to what I owe the Feds. And it’ll be great to offset some of the losses I had this month thanks to Property 2's renovation. Tax guy Matt is head and shoulders above Ross, but not just because of the refund.
Everything is explained to me. Even his secretary knows about taxes and gives me some helpful pointers. Once I get my bill, I plan to have a meeting with him to discuss my future. How much money am I really looking to earn when I retire with paid-off properties? Besides my Schedule E, what was the biggest difference between my filing last year and this year that changed me from “I owe” to I’m owed”? After looking through my past tax returns, what expenses does he see that I can cut to maximize my profits? What advice can he give me based on how his other landlord clients do business?
As far as Ross goes, fuck him. He sent me an email on April 15th that really pissed me off:
Hi Ahkenaten.
Do you need us to do an extension for you today?
I wanted to respond with the CAPS LOCK ON. Mother fucker will remember me when he wants to make money, but not when I need advice that’s critical to my financial future?! So I decided to simply not respond. If I see him in the bank job garage and he asks me what happened, I’ll just tell him that I’m going with someone who caters to landlords. And if he asks if I got his email, I’ll ask if he got the two I sent last year. No need to create bad blood, especially since it’s at my job.
You know, I throw people out of my life on a regular basis. Once someone has outlived their usefulness, I see no reason to keep them around. Ross became useless a couple years ago when he advised me to do an amended tax return that I actually didn’t need to do. I’m still paying the Feds back thanks to him. So I’m very happy with my new tax guy. Hopefully this is the beginning of a good partnership, with a guy who can actually do his job consistently. For Smalltown, it would be a surprisingly rare find.
